THE major National Hunt race of the summer was won by a horse which was prepared for his trip to Uttoxeter Racecourse with an outing at Royal Ascot. Just a week on from running at the showpiece occasion for Flat racing, Fire And Rain proved to be best in the Britannia Building Society English Summer National. Prominent throughout in the three-and-a-half mile race, the Emma Lavelle- trained 7-1 chance took up the running when the favourite Sea Wall dropped back in the field. The King of Angels was second, with Keenan's Future in third spot. The main family fun day of the summer attracted a large crowd to the Staffordshire racecourse, including many employees and members of the building society. Favourite backers were in on cloud nine for the opening three races which were each won by the market leaders, albeit very short-priced ones. The Federation of Small Businesses Novices' Hurdle went to Sambulando (4-9); Night Cru (4-6) won the Betintelligent.co.uk Maiden Hurdle under Champion Jockey Tony McCoy; and the King George At Ascot In A 6box.co.cuk Conditional Jockeys' Selling Hurdle was taken by What's Up Doc (2-1). Irish raiders have a good record at the Staffordshire, and the gambled-on Whats Up Bob continued the trend in the Ladies At The Races Handicap Hurdle at 11-2. Another favourite went into the winners' enclosure when Kikos (11-4) took the Ian Shipton Cars.co.uk Handicap Chase, while the closing Ian Shipton Cars Standard National Hunt Flat Race went the way of War Rom (11-2). *The next fixture at Uttoxeter Racecourse is 70s Night on the evening of Tuesday 7 July.
