HEAVY rain led to horse racing being abandoned at Uttoxeter Racecourse on Tuesday evening (7 JULY). Every effort was made to allow the night's sport to go ahead, but officials eventually had to call off the fixture one hour after the first race was due to be run. All racegoers, who were kept informed of developments, will be refunded their admission money. A thunderstorm shortly before racing - on top of 29 millimetres of rain since Monday - led to areas of the racecourse being unfit for horses to race. General Manager David MacDonald said: "We are hugely disappointed for our visitors who arrived for a great night out, but there is little that can be done when the elements do this to us. The ground staff did everything possible to combat the problems caused by the heavy rain, but we ultimately had to admit defeat." The next racing at Uttoxeter is on Wednesday 15 July when the first race is due off at 2.10pm.
