PUNTERS TOAST WELSH HORSES AT SUMMER BEER FESTIVAL UTTOXETER Racecourse was back on track on Wednesday (15 JULY) after heavy rain washed away a fixture eight days before. It was the racecourse's Summer Beer Festival, organised by Greene King brewery which sold its wide range of well-known ales. A massive gamble was landed when Secret Dancer won the opening Aspall's Suffolk Cyder Maiden Hurdle (Division 1) with ease. Trained in South Wales, the horse that had failed to complete either of his two previous races over hurdles was available at odds of 25-1 in the morning, but was backed into 9-2 by the start of the race. Trainer Alan Jones and rider Christian Williams completed personal doubles when the second division of the maiden hurdle was won by Humbel (CORRECT) Ben at 4-1. Persian Warrior, under conditional jockey Danny Cook, was sent off the 4-7 odds-on favourite for the Abbot Ale Novices' Hurdle, and won eased down at the finishing line. Arctic Shadow was the 4-1 winner of the Aspall's Perronelle's Blush Cyder Novices' Handicap Chase - another victory for a Welsh trainer in Tim Vaughan. The 11-1 chance Corum was the facile winner of the St Edmunds Selling Hurdle, while Openide (5-1) took the Old Speckled Hen Handicap Hurdle. The second steeplechase of the afternoon, the Greene King IPA Handicap Chase, went the way of another Welsh-trained winner Midnight Gold (9-1), from the Pembrokeshire stables of Peter Bowen. July's racing continues on Thursday 23rd - the annual Summer Garden Party afternoon when the Pimm's will flow and strawberries will be served. The month wraps up on Monday 27th with Gangsters and Molls Night, including prizes for the best-dressed visitors. Premier Enclosure £20; Grandstand Enclosure £16; Centre Course Family Enclosure £8. Accompanied children under 16 always admitted free. Car parking is free. More details are available on the racecourse's website www.uttoxeter-racecourse.co.uk.
